Shotgunning, an alternative to a beer bong, is done by punching a hole in the lower side of a can and drinking the beer very quickly. It is used in several drinking games.

To punch a hole in the can, sharp objects such as knives, bottle openers, pens, and keys can be used. The hole should be located near the bottom of the can and should be properly placed so that when the can is tilted carefully the hole will go through the air pocket and the beer won’t fly out. Most of the time, some beer will spill. Experienced shotgunners can use their teeth to puncture a hole in the can. The drinker puts his mouth on top of the hole, making sure to avoid the sharp edges, makes sure the can is tilted the right way up, and pulls the tab on top of the can. The effects of gravity and pressure combine and force the drink out of the can rapidly. Inexperienced shotgunners must be aware that this can cause the drinker to become completely soaked. An alternative to shotgunning is to use a bottle bong, a device that is similar to beer funnels, but work as a siphon to expand the beer quickly.

There are different variations to shotgunning that are differentiated by what kind of drink container is used and where the hole is punched.

Strawpedo, also known as bendy-straw or snorkeling, is a variation of shotgunning that uses a glass bottle instead of a can. Inserted at the top of the bottle is a bendy straw, with the small end bent facing down, held over the edge of the bottle. For a player to drink, the elbow of the straw and the mouth of the bottle is upended and placed in the drinker’s mouth. Since the straw bends, it gives a proper flow of air into the bottle and the drinker will be able to consume the drink rapidly. To simplify and speed up the process of this variation, devices have been designed. The most common of these devices is a large plastic tube that has a smaller and thinner tube inside it. The large tube is placed on the top of the bottle and the way the beverage is drunk is similar to the original strawpedo.

Another variation came about in the desire to not spill any beer. In this variation, the player has to consume about 1 inch of the beverage then poke the hole near the top, making sure that it is above liquid level on the part of the can that does not have a tab hole. The term “Speedhole” is used for this method because most drinkers like to consume the can in one go.

Harpooning is another adaptation of blowholing, but instead of drinking only some of the can’s contents, you open the beer and drink it normally at first. After drinking for a second, poke the side of the can, making sure that it is near the bottom. Make sure that when you punch a hole into the can, you do it carefully because the can has to still be on your mouth. This variation has the least amount of prep-work.

This last variation requires smoking, but is still the same concept as normal shotgunning. The difference is that before you drink, you need to inhale a large amount of smoke, keep it in your mouth, shotgun the beer. Once the beer is finished, exhale the smoke so that it comes out from the top of the beer can. This method is also known as “The Chimney.”
