Legally Drinking
You would be surprised how huge the differences of legal drinking ages are in every country. The ages vary from zero to twenty-one, United States being the only one that falls under the twenty-one category. The countries that fall under the no minimum drinking age are: Armenia, Azerbaijan, China, Fiji, Nigeria, Poland, Portugal, Soviet Georgia, Thailand, and Viet Nam. The lowest legal drinking age is sixteen. Countries like Greece, Austria, France, Belgium, Germany, Turkey, Spain, Italy, and the Netherlands are part of this bracket. The age bracket that has the most countries is eighteen years old; some of these countries are: Hong Kong, Indonesia, Jamaica, Russia, United Kingdom (age sixteen in restaurants), Brazil, Finland, Canada (age nineteen in some provinces), and New Zealand. South Korea is the only one in the nineteen years bracket while Japan and Iceland are the two that fall under the age twenty category.
There are a lot of speculation about lowering the legal drinking age in the United States. Some contend that this could result in reducing the rate of drinking among youths. Others maintain that present restrictions should remain. These issues are surfacing today because of the “forbidden fruit” theory. This theory states that the more youths are not allowed to do something, the more they will do it, oftentimes excessively. By lowering the minimum drinking age, youths will not be so tempted to drink since they’ll be free to do it anyway.
Some of the solutions recommended for these problems are for people to more actively teach youths about safe drinking or even having drinking learners permits for under-age people. Some sectors contend, however, that whatever the solutions may be, the personality of the drinker should always be taken into consideration when dealing with his or her particular case. A sense of self-regulation is also espoused by others; the idea is that If the drinker himself already knows and practices self-control then it doesn’t matter whether or not they are taught about safe drinking because they would have the common sense not to abuse their alcohol intake and to know their limits.
Legal age drinking, and the whole concept of propriety in drinking are clearly contentious issues, they must be taken seriously so that alcohol-related problems can be lessened.
