Bar Drinkware: Holding your Drinks with Flair!
Where would we be without containers for our drinks? There is a lot of drinkware that is available because of the many types of drinks that we have. The different kinds of drinkware are: beakers, beer steins, chalices, coffee cups/mugs, mugs/cups, quaiches, sake cups, and teacups.
While most of these may sound familiar to you, some of them may not. For example, a beer stein is a traditional German beer holder. The modern ones are usually have a lid and thumb lid. The lid is for keeping the beer in the stein when the drinker is engaged in other activities such as singing or dancing. Originally, the lids were made for sanitary purposes because in the 1400’s Europe was swarmed with flies so an order was passed that food and beverages should be covered.
A quaich is a two-handled drinking cup or bowl from Scotland. It was inspired by the silver bowls with flat handles that were used as bleeding vessels in England in the 17th century.
Glassware does not only mean glass, but also can mean plastic. Glassware can be clear, colored, or have designs printed on it. Compared to a cup, a glass is taller, without a handle, and can hold more liquid. Stemware, on the other hand, is drinkware that stands on stems.
There are a lot of different glasses because of their use in alcoholic drinks. The kinds of glasses are: collins, highball, pony, iced tea, juice, pilsner, pint, shot, tumbler, and wheat beer. These glasses vary in shape, width, length, and use.
Stemware has only a few kinds because its use isn’t as flexible as glassware. Nonetheless, stemware still has its uses. The types of stemware are: champagne flute, cocktail glass, sherry glass, wine glass, and snifter.
Drinkware is very complex compared to dinnerware because of its spectacular shapes and sizes. It also has a slightly more important role than plates because food can be placed on a piece of clean paper and it would still be okay. Try that with a beverage and you would spill your drink.
